One hour of exercise can prevent depression, study finds
One hour of exercise can prevent depression, study findsOne hour of exercise can prevent depression, study findsTheres good news for those of us who find the idea of going to the gym more than once a week insurmountable. A new study found that you dont need two-a-day bootcamps, daylong health retreats, or fancy equipment if you want to make a difference in your wellbeing - you just need an hour of physical activity every week. The research on exerciseAnalyzing the health and exercise habits of more than 33,000 adults over 11 years, a newAmerican Journal of Psychiatry study found thatan hour of exercise a week was enough to keep depression at bay. In fact, the researchers found that participants who did not exercise were 44% more likely to experience depression. Participants didnt even need to break a sweat to reap the benefits. The researchers found that low levels of aerobic intensity were just as effective as the vigorous kinds. This backs up other research that has come to the saat korn conclusion To keep our brains and bodies happy, we need to keep moving, even if its just adding a few more steps to our day. A 2017 study found that just adding 48 minutes of walking to your weekly routine could help prevent major mobility disabilities in the future.Be like miceIts not just humans that can benefit from getting up and moving. In 2016, researchers noted that mice who got to run their hearts out on running wheels had more neurons than the mice who had to stay sedentary. The researchers for that study havent quite figured out how mice brains applies to our brains, but they are excited to remind us that brain cells produced under running conditions are not just quantitatively but qualitatively different. What you should doIn a modern workplace, its all too easy to stay sitting in our cubicles. But what these studies shows that even when youre busy with work and obligations, just getting up and moving around each day can make substantial changes in your wellbeing.

Why savvy people say no to some job offers
Why savvy people say no to some job offersWhy savvy people say no to some job offersFrom the time were little (except for the terrible twos when everythings a big No-fest) were pretty much conditioned to be nice, play nice and share everything we have. Pop culture also regularly reminds us that we should be mora open to things, from uber-producer Shonda Rhimess book Year of Yes, in which she committed to saying yes to everything instead of no, to Say Yes to the Dress, a show thats entire premise is about urging brides to announce their commitmentto a few yards of fabric. In the spirit of being ornery for a good reason, let me buck this tide of assenting to everything. Id like to encourage you to say no mora often and to mean it. In that vein, before you accept the next invitation that comes your way, give it a quick rethink, who knows you might actually want to say yes instead of feeling forced into it.Say no to that interviewYouve been out of work for a while and everyone in your im mediate orbit is pressuring you to GET A JOB. They mean well of course, they want you to feel better about yourself, hope youll soon have more disposable income, and really really hope you might start showering on a more regular basis. The thing is, that if youre serious about looking for a full-time job or gig you can know just how debilitating it can be to get all dressed up for an interview for a job you dont really want. Worse still is going in knowing youre worth more than the salary or that the actual job compromises you, your skill set and hopes for your career and could even set you back. When to bail Forget the interview if the job doesnt even sound better on paper. If youre second-guessing every career choice youve ever made. If the thought of working there, even as a stopgap, depresses you beyond measure and will ultimately hinder your ability to secure the next better interview, you should probably give it a pass.A word of caution Sometimes it pays to go on an interview f or a job youre not sure you want simply to practice. But step out of the process as soon as you can.Say no to a job offer Congrats All that resume polishing has been paying off and youve been offered the job of your dreams- or have you? This would be the time for a quick gut check to see if youre as excited as you think you are. Think back to when you first heard about this position. Now think about whats been offered to you. Is the salary the saatkorn? Are the benefits there as well? What about your title or responsibilities? Do you want the job because it improves your skills and offers a good working environment - or because the title or the company look impressive to friends and family? If youre worried about project creep before even starting a project, its a good time to put the brake on things. When to bail Retailers and advertisers arent the only ones who are great at the old bait and switch some sketchy job descriptions or offers seem to do the exact same thing. If the job you applied for came with a higher salary and now youve been offered a fancier title but paltrier paycheck, you already know something about your potential future employer, they cant be trusted to do right by you. Do you really want to start working for a company that doesnt keep its word or misleads you intentionally from the get-go? Probably not. You deserve to be excited about your new opportunities A word of caution No job is perfect though, say no to too many opportunities and the offers might stop coming in.Say no to networkingYou know that you should get out there more, and so you sign up for more Meetups than you can keep track of, and start RSVPing in the affirmative to every even remotely interesting industry event. The problem with being at too many events is that you become that guy. You know the one. Hes at every single corporate event, cocktail in hand, eagerly scanning every new face to make a new connection since he already knows everyone and is desperate for a new contact. When to bail Its fine to attend networking events, but try to be more circumspect about accepting or sharing invitations. If you hear about a talk or interactive event held by a thought leader you admire, its nice to attend, but dont assume youll be able to speak with her. Chances are good that the best events will be so crowded to the rafters youll never get to meet your hero. Instead, try to focus on higher quality events or even the ones that offer a more guided way of networking. In this way, you have more potential for professional improvement rather than another night sitting in the corner grumbling about everyone in your industry.I co-founded and ran a networking organization in partnership with the geschftsleben development offices of a former mayor of NYC and despite meeting hundreds upon hundreds of strangers a year, I always tried to manage my expectations for every event. I challenged myself to make one meaningful contact per event, and that made the entire eveni ng a success. I still do. I dont believe in collecting business cards or sharing social media information haphazardly, in networking as in life, less can frequently be so much more.A word of caution Dont expect to gain career changing opportunities at every event and you might end up being extremely pleased with the results of your next networking efforts. Say no to the next business tripThis one is tricky. If part of your job description specifically involves travel, you might have a hard time saying no to an important business trip. That said, if the bulk of the work you hope to accomplish can as easily be completed via Skype or Slack or any other virtual means, you can probably skip a few trips. When to bail If youre coming down with a bad cold, are so fried you can barely function at home much less when your home base is a hotel room, youre no good to anyone on their home turf. A word of caution There really is no substitute for face-to-face interaction sometimes. If youre plann ing to increase your monthly retainer, asking for a raise, or even presenting something that makes you look like a rock star, you should probably do it in person. But if its a minor detail that can be worked out by phone or Skype, do that instead.

Stephensonsince 2007, and employs 267,000 people. The Bell Telephone Company founded the company on October 5, 1983, in Delaware, and has popular subsidiaries like DIRECT TV, ATT Mobility, Cricket Wireless, and more. While that number appears to be large, its actually only five percent of ATTs overall workforce, despite the company saying that it has provided mobile and remote access technologies to mor e than 130,000 employees that allow them to work from a variety of locations. Interestingly, ATT is the largest multichannel video service provider in the United States in regards to total subscribers, which is over 25,000,000. The companys telecommuting program, however, has hit bumps along the way (e.g., a contraction of the telecommuting program in 2007), but having 12,000 people working from homequalifies the company as telecommute friendly. In fact, because of its large telecommuting workforce, ATT is named one of the top major corporations for telecommuting. ATT also actively recruits retired military personnel and military spouses. Pay,Benefits, and Employment The positions that allow telecommuting are across many divisions, and thus, pay varies with position. However,ATT offers an array of benefits for full-time employees, which often includes medical, dental and vision, 401(k), paid time off, tuition reimbursement, life insurance, discounts on ATT products and services, flexible spending accounts, adoption assistance, leave of absence, and many more. If youre interested in working here, use the ATT employment page by visiting the officialATT employment website. You may notice that the jobs database doesnt make it easy to locate a telecommuting position, but you can search for terms like telecommute and work from home to bring up positions that may offer remote work. Interesting Company Information According toATTs official website, a 2010 survey of 11,000 employees revealed some surprising information about ATTs telecommuters. For instance, 98 percent of supervisors agreed that telecommuters are effective at communicating and meeting their goals. Additionally, 96 percent would say the same about collaborating, and 97 percent agree that they can manage their time. This is good news when it comes to telecommuters, as theres support in the data. When it comes to remote work, 92 percent of ATT telecommuters have said that telecommuting helps them achieve a balance between work and home life. Plus, 63 percent of employees admitted that they enjoy having some flexibility in their schedule when it comes to days that they telecommute. Finally, 94 percent of telecommuters acknowledged that the average 54 minutes saved (in commuting time) was ultimately given back to the company as additional productive time.

The Trap of Untracked, Unlimited Paid Time Off
The Trap of Untracked, Unlimited Paid Time OffThe Trap of Untracked, Unlimited Paid Time OffAs the workforce evolves, unlimited and untracked vacation policies have become tempting benefits, but they are actually a big mistake for employers. Executives want to be the cool parents to their employees and also free up HR teams to focus on strategic decisions instead of tracking paid time off (PTO). The reality is, untracked, unlimited PTO isnt always beneficial to employees. In fact, its probable that initiatives such as untracked, unlimited PTO do more harm than good. Businesses can offer unlimited vacation, but they should track PTO if they want to ensure that their vacation policy actually has a positive impact on their workplace. You might think that employees would abuse this generous leave policy, but the opposite is actually true. Unlimited PTO usually leads to staff taking less vacation and fewer paid days off, a problem that is only exacerbated by a lack of tracking and account ability. When the guardrails are removed, employees grow more cautious and fearful, and rarely take full advantage of unlimited policies. Instead, they make judgment calls based on what they think makes them look better to their managers, regardless of their impact on their own wellbeing. Automating PTO Processes Is a Solution to the Problem The most effective strategy for encouraging employees to take time off while improving HRs workload is actually automating PTO processes, leid opting out of oversight altogether. Employees need to know that their bosses dont see them as tireless workers or cogs in the machine. They want to be valued for their contribution to the company but also have their personal life and boundaries respected. Getting this feedback right for executives and HR teams is a challenge. A simple way to identify and understand this potential risk is by tracking and measuring unlimited PTO. This will allow employers to gather data and evidence to support internal communications with employees when concerning trends are spotted. This is particularly important in the U.S. Employees Fear Seeming Expendable to Their Employers American workers are especially addicted to work and are afraid of appearing expendable to their employer. Many are also guided by the unhealthy belief that vacations are a sign of weakness instead of a necessary part of work-life balance. A Center for American Progress study found that a lot of employees believe taking too many days off work would cost them bonuses, promotions, and even their jobs. A Project Time Off report found that more than half of Americans dont use all of their vacation days. That same study found roughly 1 in 4 Americans had not taken a vacation day in over a year. Of those surveyed, the most commonly cited reason for not taking time off welches the fear of being replaced. Working long stretches without breaks is often unhealthy, harmful, and even downright dangerous to employees. A number of cl inical studies found that poor vacation habits can actually kill you. A State University of New York studys research found that cardiovascular disease patients who didnt take annual week-long vacations were 30% more likely to die from their condition. The Helsinki Businessmen Study concluded that vacations improve longevity in working adults, and the Journal of Happiness Studies research showed that time off is enormously beneficial to mental health. Predictably, employees who continuously overwork themselves and fail to take adequate time away from the office are less happy and less healthy than their more balanced peers. Organization Can Lose When Employees Have Unlimited PTO Businesses also stand to lose from vacation-phobic employees. When employees burn out from being overworked, their productivity suffers, their health can decline and usually, staff who are unexpectedly absent from the office increases. According to a Liberty Mutual analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statist ics, the US economy loses $100 billion annually to employees absenteeism. Circadian, a workforce solutions company, estimates that absenteeism costs U.S. companies about $3,600 a year for hourly staff and at least $2,600 for salaried. Its clear that employees skipping vacations poses serious problems, problems only amplified by untracked, unlimited PTO policies. When people are not given parameters around acceptable PTO practices, they succumb to peer pressure, take fewer breaks and shorter vacations. Organizations Are Understanding the Limitations of Unlimited PTO Businesses are starting to catch on and, after realizing the danger of unlimited, untracked time off, they are appropriately adapting their policies. Successful companies such as Kickstarter, the crowdfundingsite, and Baremetrics, a software firm for startups, both canceled their untracked, unlimited PTO policies. Barametrics instituted a two-week minimum with extensive tracking, and Kickstarter went back to a 25-day allotment. They learned, adapted, and improved, providing a guidepost for the companies that follow PTO tracking is a necessity. The lesson is not to completely avoid unlimited PTO policies but to commit to tracking them. Records allow you to learn about your firm, identify any issues, and, if necessary, encourage people to take some well deserved time off. Your employees will be healthier and happier and your geschftliches miteinander better for it.

Why you need to vet and coach your job references
Why you need to vet and coach your job referencesWhy you need to vet and coach your job referencesAt their best, good job references are your cheerleaders. The best ones can convince a hiring manager why you are the best person for the job with their glowing recommendation. But at their worst, they can be the reason why you get ruled out of contention.A hiring manager is influenced by whom they speak to and what they learn in those crucial job reference calls. They know that up to81% of job seekers lie during job interviews, and they will be on the hunt to sniff out information about how excited and prepared you really are for the role.To make sure the hiring manager hears the right information about you, you need to be strategic about which kind of people you pick, and prepare them for what kinds of questions they may hear. Heres how to do it rightGive your job reference proper elendiceThe last thing you want is for your job reference to sound surprised when a hiring manager calls t hem out of the blue asking about your work ethic UhhhhI dont know her? You should give your job reference ample notice about who the hiring manager is and how they will be contacting them. An emailed recommendation is going to require different preparation than a phone call.Above all, you should ask their permission to be used as a job reference before you sign them up for the role. Fifteen percent of employees said they were putting down references who had no idea they were being listed as references. Dont do this. Asking is not only a professional courtesy, its strategic. The request to be your reference is when you can feel out how enthusiastic your reference is about giving you a recommendation for a job. If youre unsure of what the reference would say about you, do not pick them to vouch for you.Coach them about what kind of questions theyll be askedOnce youve picked your team of cheerleaders, you need to coach them about what kind of questions theyll be asked. There is no shame in updating them about what you have been up to in the last few months if this is someone you do not work with closely. Send them a copy of recent projects you have done, your resume and the cover letter you used to apply for the role. Recognize that different colleagues are able to speak about different skills. A peer will have different knowledge about your internal influence and leadership abilities than a boss.To prepare them, tell them what kind of qualities the job is seeking, so that they can speak to that. You do not want them to have no answer on your editing abilities if the job wants excellent editing skills. Tell them why you believe the company wants to hire you and how you are likely to be useful for that company so they can reinforce that, Priscilla Claman, the co-founder of Career Strategiesm, told Harvard Business Review. One could talk about your ability to establish relationships with colleagues, another about your technical skills, and another about your project management abilities.Recognize that common reference questions will ask how you perform under adversity like How well did the candidate perform under stressful conditions such as facing sales or project deadlines? or Are there any areas that the candidate could use improvement? If you know your reference would not be able to provide a positive example or spin a positive out of a negative, you may be better off choosing a different reference.Your job references ultimately reveal your character. Who is able to give you a recommendation reflects the kind of professional you are. Half-hearted recommendations reveal that you did not do your homework. Its up to you to make sure that the vision of how you see yourself as a working professional is getting told.

Working Remotely At Netskope
Working Remotely At Netskope Below is an article originally written by Zoe Revis at PowerToFly Partner Netskope, and published on September 13, 2018. Go to Netskopes page on PowerToFly to binnensee their open positions and learn mora.In this Life Netskope, we talk to Andrea Schreiner our Central Channel schlussverkauf Director out of Frisco, Texas. In her two years at Netskope, Andrea has made a huge impact with the Netskope field and channel teams covering the Central US area. Outside of Netskope, Andrea spends her weekends between the softball field cheering on her oldest daughter and her youngest at the horse barn. If you have spent much time with Andrea on the phone, you have probably heard her four-legged child Sprocket in the background. What made you choose Netskope?I have a funny hiring story. Mike Burnett, who was a Regional abverkauf Manager at the time, had talked to me a few times about coming to Netskope and timing was never right. A few months later, I met Gary Ochs, VP of Channel Sales at the time, at the OH airport, we started connecting the dots on Netskope, his open position and it being the company Mike Burnett had been calling me about, the timing was perfect Gary and I both boarded our separate planes texting Mike and two weeks later I had an offer letter. It was a right place, at the right time situation. Once I started the interview process and learning about Netskope, the product, the people, and the culture, I knew Netskope was the place for me.Whats your favorite thing about Netskope and why?My favorite thing is the culture, the people and how everybody works well together as a team. Whenever I interview people for potential jobs at Netskope, I dont want to sound cheesy and oversell it, but I talk a lot about how amazing the culture is here. Everybody at Netskope collaborates and helps each other in order to accomplish our main goal, which is to see Netskope become the next iconic security company.Working from home, how do you stay con nected to HQ and your team in the region? As someone who works remotely, Netskope makes it so easy to stay connected through Slack, (which I am still learning). Everyone is so receptive, you never have to worry about being stranded on an island. I really enjoy Chris Andrews, our SVP of Sales bi-weekly calls with the worldwide sales team. Its a great way to keep up with what is happening at HQ and learn about our newest products. Our Central US team also has a call every Monday where we share updates in the territory, and best practices. What advice would you give to someone starting a remote position at Netskope? My advice would be to learn your resources at corporate, do a good job of getting them out in the field and make lasting connections with the members of your team. I support eight different sales/sales engineering teams so I make sure that I am communicating with them almost every day. In a company where most everyone is remote, it takes work to keep a great culture and I feel like Netskope has done a great job in this area. If you could only watch one TV show for the rest of your life what would it be and why?Oh, thats a hard one, Id have to go with This Is Us. Its a great storyline and it seems as if it is a real family going through heartache and happiness and working together. Its a rollercoaster of emotions but it also has some great lessons. One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stere otype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the differen ce in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.b r/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($ 67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
