In that vein, before you accept the next invitation that comes your way, give it a quick rethink, who knows you might actually want to say yes instead of feeling forced into it.Say no to that interviewYouve been out of work for a while and everyone in your im mediate orbit is pressuring you to GET A JOB. They mean well of course, they want you to feel better about yourself, hope youll soon have more disposable income, and really really hope you might start showering on a more regular basis. The thing is, that if youre serious about looking for a full-time job or gig you can know just how debilitating it can be to get all dressed up for an interview for a job you dont really want. Worse still is going in knowing youre worth more than the salary or that the actual job compromises you, your skill set and hopes for your career and could even set you back.When to bail Forget the interview if the job doesnt even sound better on paper. If youre second-guessing every career choice youve ever made. If the job you applied for came with a higher salary and now youve been offered a fancier title but paltrier paycheck, you already know something about your potential future employer, they cant be trusted to do right by you. Do you really want to start working for a company that doesnt keep its word or misleads you intentionally from the get-go? Probably not. You deserve to be excited about your new opportunities A word of caution No job is perfect though, say no to too many opportunities and the offers might stop coming in.Say no to networkingYou know that you should get out there more, and so you sign up for more Meetups than you can keep track of, and start RSVPing in the affirmative to every even remotely interesting industry event. The problem with being at too many events is that you become that guy. You know the one. Hes at every single corporate event, cocktail in hand, eagerly scanning every new face to make a new connection since he already knows everyone and is desperate for a new contact.When to bail Its fine to attend networking events, but try to be more circumspect about accepting or sharing invitations. If you hear about a talk or interactive event held by a thought leader you admire, its nice to attend, but dont assume youll be able to speak with her. Chances are good that the best events will be so crowded to the rafters youll never get to meet your hero. Instead, try to focus on higher quality events or even the ones that offer a more guided way of networking. In this way, you have more potential for professional improvement rather than another night sitting in the corner grumbling about everyone in your industry.I co-founded and ran a networking organization in partnership with the geschftsleben development offices of a former mayor of NYC and despite meeting hundreds upon hundreds of strangers a year, I always tried to manage my expectations for every event. When to bail If youre coming down with a bad cold, are so fried you can barely function at home much less when your home base is a hotel room, youre no good to anyone on their home turf. A word of caution There really is no substitute for face-to-face interaction sometimes. If youre plann ing to increase your monthly retainer, asking for a raise, or even presenting something that makes you look like a rock star, you should probably do it in person. But if its a minor detail that can be worked out by phone or Skype, do that instead.

The reality is, untracked, unlimited PTO isnt always beneficial to employees. In fact, its probable that initiatives such as untracked, unlimited PTO do more harm than good. Businesses can offer unlimited vacation, but they should track PTO if they want to ensure that their vacation policy actually has a positive impact on their workplace. You might think that employees would abuse this generous leave policy, but the opposite is actually true. Unlimited PTO usually leads to staff taking less vacation and fewer paid days off, a problem that is only exacerbated by a lack of tracking and account ability. When the guardrails are removed, employees grow more cautious and fearful, and rarely take full advantage of unlimited policies. Instead, they make judgment calls based on what they think makes them look better to their managers, regardless of their impact on their own wellbeing. A Project Time Off report found that more than half of Americans dont use all of their vacation days. That same study found roughly 1 in 4 Americans had not taken a vacation day in over a year. Of those surveyed, the most commonly cited reason for not taking time off welches the fear of being replaced. Working long stretches without breaks is often unhealthy, harmful, and even downright dangerous to employees. A number of cl inical studies found that poor vacation habits can actually kill you. A State University of New York studys research found that cardiovascular disease patients who didnt take annual week-long vacations were 30% more likely to die from their condition. The Helsinki Businessmen Study concluded that vacations improve longevity in working adults, and the Journal of Happiness Studies research showed that time off is enormously beneficial to mental health. Predictably, employees who continuously overwork themselves and fail to take adequate time away from the office are less happy and less healthy than their more balanced peers. Organization Can Lose When Employees Have Unlimited PTO Businesses also stand to lose from vacation-phobic employees. When employees burn out from being overworked, their productivity suffers, their health can decline and usually, staff who are unexpectedly absent from the office increases. According to a Liberty Mutual analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statist ics, the US economy loses $100 billion annually to employees absenteeism. Circadian, a workforce solutions company, estimates that absenteeism costs U.S. companies about $3,600 a year for hourly staff and at least $2,600 for salaried. Its clear that employees skipping vacations poses serious problems, problems only amplified by untracked, unlimited PTO policies. When people are not given parameters around acceptable PTO practices, they succumb to peer pressure, take fewer breaks and shorter vacations. Organizations Are Understanding the Limitations of Unlimited PTO Businesses are starting to catch on and, after realizing the danger of unlimited, untracked time off, they are appropriately adapting their policies. Successful companies such as Kickstarter, the crowdfundingsite, and Baremetrics, a software firm for startups, both canceled their untracked, unlimited PTO policies. Barametrics instituted a two-week minimum with extensive tracking, and Kickstarter went back to a 25-day allotment. They learned, adapted, and improved, providing a guidepost for the companies that follow PTO tracking is a necessity. The lesson is not to completely avoid unlimited PTO policies but to commit to tracking them. Records allow you to learn about your firm, identify any issues, and, if necessary, encourage people to take some well deserved time off. I support eight different sales/sales engineering teams so I make sure that I am communicating with them almost every day. In a company where most everyone is remote, it takes work to keep a great culture and I feel like Netskope has done a great job in this area. If you could only watch one TV show for the rest of your life what would it be and why?Oh, thats a hard one, Id have to go with This Is Us. Its a great storyline and it seems as if it is a real family going through heartache and happiness and working together. Its a rollercoaster of emotions but it also has some great lessons. One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stere otype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change.
